Before we Begin lets get it clear, I do not do nude, adult or full-body “high” glamour work with models under 18. No exceptions. I will require proof of age before beginning any nude, adult or glamour shoot.
TFP = Time For Prints - TFCD = Time For CD.
These shoots are generally a way for 2 or more persons to benefit from a single photoshoot, the most common being 1 Model and 1 Photographer.
Models charge for their time in front of a camera, that makes sense, Photographers also charge for their time behind a camera, they too need to earn a crust. The model has a lot of expenses, a certain lifestyle to keep up, hair, make up, nails, clothes, sun tans, etc etc. The Tog, also has expenses, Equipment, studio time, processing time, printing costs, film in some cases. For those of you who know me, my waistline costs a fortune to maintain too.
If the shoot is for the sole benefit of 1 person then it makes sense that they will need to pay the other.
In a TFP shoot, no money changes hands. The model doesn’t get an hourly or session fee, and the photographer doesn’t get an hourly fee, a session fee, or any pay for providing the model with prints and/or digital images (the “CD” part – usually the model gets a CD-R with her image selection burned onto it.) All participants are doing the shoot in hopes of getting good quality images for their portfolios, which they can use for self-promotion.
Let me first say this is generally how I work, but it does depend on many factors.
For a typical 3 Hour Studio Shoot, I will expect to get through about 150 photos, about half of these will be usable, (normally about 10 will be worthwhile printing), expect to have 3 or 4 changes of clothes in that time. You will receive a CD with Approximately 75 Images contained, (I weed out the poor lighting, blinking, blurred shots). You will also Receive a "Contact List" (Thumbnail) print out of all the Images on the CD. The Images will be Print Quality, which is far too large for Web Use. If the model does not have the capability to resize Images for Web use, I will resize and provide on a second CD 10 Images of her choice, suitable for web use, 2-3 weeks after the model has told me which she prefers. Please note the CD's do not include any Photoshop / Edited Prints unless previously agreed, these take time, and have to be done at the right pace.
What I want from a model on a typical TFP Shoot
Professional Commitment - I intend to invest time and money in the shoot, just because you have not laid out any money, and are not expecting payment does not mean that a phonecall the day before saying you have changed your mind is acceptable. It is unfortunate that Emergencies happen, but failing those there is really no excuse.
Punctuality - I do not build in a waiting time, I do allow for studio set up, and clear away, I allow for research time into locations, I allow for natural breaks and for a relaxed working pace, Hopefully some laughs too, but I do not pay a studio to wait for you. If you are running late, call me. If you are not going to show, let me know.
Ability to take direction. I am told that I can be quite precise when it comes to asking for a particular pose.
Unless otherwise agreed upon, I do not provide the wardrobe. Bring your own, as much as you reasonably expect to use. If the shoot is studio based then Private changing areas are provided. I do not normally provide a MUA (Make Up Artist) for TFP Shoots either, so the ability to do your own make up is pretty essential.
What a model should expect from me on a typical TFP Shoot
Professional Commitment - See Above
Punctuality - See above, this further extends to you receiving your Prints or CD, I always have the prints or CD as agreed posted within 2 weeks of the shoot.
Open to suggestions - Its a TFP/CD Shoot, its for your benefit too, if you have a particular pose (or type of shot) you need, let me know and we will incorporate it into the shoot.
A Model Release Form - Yes a release form is for your benefit, legally (in the UK) the shots belong to me, a release form in this case would give you rights to use the images for your PROMOTIONAL use, i.e. on Portfolios on sites such as Net-Model or OMP, as comp cards to send to Agencies. The Promotional Work must list me as the Photographer. I also expect the right to use the shots for my purposes, and depending on your experience we may come to an agreement with regards to the sale of shots, but please note I rarely sell my own shots, so do not depend on an income.
Tea, Coffee, water and Biscuits. We all get the munchies.
What Levels of Shoot are Expected
It is also important for the model to understand what will be expected of her at a shoot. This should be agreed to ahead of time and both photographer and model should honour the agreement. Saying that all self respecting Photographers will understand if you do not feel comfortable being nude in certain circumstances, but changing your mind for no obvious reason will certainly limit the work you are likely to be offered.
Know your own personal limits and make them clear in advance of the Shoot. Avoid shots that are beyond your comfort level. I will always accept your personal limits. If another photographer does not accept your personal limits, find another photographer. Know your own personal limits and make them clear.
If the session is going well and we are both comfortable with each other, we may jointly decide to “step it up a level” and do a more revealing shot, if we are both willing to do so, (within age limits). There’s no harm in either party asking politely and neither of us should be offended so long as the inquiry is polite. If a Photographer will not drop the subject after you’ve made your limits clear, you should end the photo session.
Chaperones?
I do not object to chaperones whether or not the shoot involves nudity. However, they are required to be quiet and respectful while the shoot is going on, I prefer that they are not "the boyfriend", and it is wonderful if they have teamaking skills.
